Chiang Rai Accomidations

Moon and Sun hotel

moon and sun hotel Chiangrai

Have you ever been to Chiang Rai?

If you have, then you know that this city is a total maze for someone who has been driving for 5 hours straight along the old road through Fang from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai and can not even think straight afterwards, let alone try to guess where this or that road is situated with no signs around.

But I’m rambling.

Long story short, I booked Mirror Art Guesthouse online before coming to Chiang Rai for an overnight stay. But as me and my husband reached this town along the highway no.1 and managed at last to find the main road where theoretically our guesthouse should have been situated, our luck ran out. It is on one of the side streets of Singhaklai Road, and we logically assumed that we’ll see soi signs or guesthouse signs on the main road... No such thing! It would have been hilarious
if we weren’t so tired – we called the guesthouse – they couldn’t speak English and were not overly concerned about loosing the booking, we asked the policeman and some locals where the guesthouse was and they all gave us some vague directions which didn’t help the case.

In the end we gave up, drove back through Singhaklai Rd and noticed this small place – Moon and Sun Hotel, which I remembered reading about from numerous Trip advisor reviews while searching for accommodation in Chiang Rai.

We stopped, enquired about the free rooms, and thanks God, they had them.
It’s a lovely quiet place with 24 hour secure parking, very helpful receptionists with decent English, nice decor and good rooms.

We managed to get one of the last double bed rooms with breakfast for just 600 baht. The decor was very clean and soothing; we had a four poster bed with soft bed linens, TV with plenty of channels, a fridge, nice bathroom and fast Wi-Fi internet. I was very happy with the arrangement, knowing that I wouldn’t have got all that in the other guesthouse.

The hotel is quite far from the Night Market if you are on foot, but with your own transport you only need 5 minutes to get there. There is also a string of street vendors at night along Singhaklai Road towards the highway and close to King Mengrai Monument. Don’t forget that the vendors will pack up early as Chiang Rai is quieter and doesn’t keep the same late hours as Chiang Mai.

Anyway, after sleeping like a log, we woke up just in time for breakfast. Ok, standard eggs and sausage were something you would expect to get from 7-11, but they were eatable. On the plus side you could help yourself to as much toast with butter as you can, plenty of coffee and tea, 2 types of jam and even cornflakes with milk for the healthy type.

Overall, I think the hotel and its service were very good value for money. It’s easy to locate, no problems with parking, breakfast is ok, rooms are lovely – what else do you want for a stress free but budget accommodation in Chiang Rai?

Just go along the highway no.1 coming from Chiang Mai, get to the King Mengrai Monument at the beginning of Singhaklai Rd and turn on your left, drive straight until you see Moon and Sun Hotel on your left side.

Chiang Rai

on the bank of the Kok River within town area, contains what is believed to be the oldest Holy Relic even before King Mengrai built Chiang Rai. Doi Chom Thong has been a sacred site for aextremely long time. The site was surely reverenced as the home of local spirits before Buddhism arrived in the area.
