The "Moo Ga Tat" style restaurants are a true non tourist experience that any person, that want to enjoy a Thai experience must try while in Chiang Mai. They are cook it yourself buffets.
Yes you actually cook you meal on top of open charcoal burning fires. (Some franchises use gas) on top of a combination steam boat and barbecue grill devise. The waiter will set up the fire and grill for you and you collect from the buffet table meats and different types of tofu, noodles, vegetables and some even offer a select on fresh seafood to temp you. The waiters will also serve you drinks and beers to assure you are well taken care of.
The restaurants are open air restaurants with high roofs like warehouse so the heat may escape and keep the rain out in rainy season so they are all year round dinning facilities. Do not expect posh decor or a live show as they are true eateries that Chiang Mai people love to partake in. Opening only in the evenings and cater for groups and families, to the point if you go alone you often pay a tiny surcharge
They are way to see and be seen while in chiang mai.
My personal favorite is the one on the outside, north east corner of the moat that surrounds the city. That is on Maninoparat road. It offers some precooked items and a good selection of seafood. and costs 109 baht a head and if you leave food because you took too much is 50 baht a plate fine.
